The Good Fellow George

The humble Sunday Roast is the weekly staple of any sane person’s meal plan, and as luck would have it, an invite to try to newly launched Sunday Lunch menu at @thegoodfellowgeorge recently landed in my inbox, and after digging my knife and fork into their offering this afternoon, it’s a recommendation that I’m more than happy to make!

I’m tempted to rename The Good Fellow George to the Crown of Canning Circus, because it’s a total jewel of a pub. I’ve been meaning to visit for ages (after hearing tales of their famous bottomless cheeseboards) but this was my first trip, and I’m immediately hooked – it’s cosy, vibrant, and friendly, and I felt at home straight away.

The Sunday Lunch menu is designed to satisfy pretty much any craving you have, offering up beef, chicken, lamb and pork, plus a tasty looking mushroom pie for the veggies.

I went for the beef and thought it was lovely, and I was also chuffed with the size of the Yorkshire pudding it came with (being from Yorkshire, I refuse to acknowledge a Sunday Roast that doesn’t come with a proper Yorkshire pud). On top of that, two types of potato (roasted and mashed, obv), stunning braised red cabbage, creamy cauliflower cheese and a sharing bowl of greens rounded off the plate nicely, and left me feeling plenty satisfied.

I obviously had room for dessert (I always do), and went for the Easter special – an extremely fudgy Creme Egg Chocolate Brownie served with ice cream – an absolutely cracking end to a truly lovely lunch.

I know the classic thing to do is to go for a walk or a drive and end up at a country pub for your roast, but if you can’t be arsed with a walk and your car’s out of petrol and you just want to go somewhere closer to home, The Good Fellow George is it!
